There are 8.7 million species currently living on Earth, give or take 1.3 million. Biologists do not study them all. In fact, there is some concern that experimental biologists focus their research on a very small fraction of the species on our planet, sometimes designated as model organisms. This presentation will trace the rise of model organisms and the decline of organismal diversity in some areas of recent biology. Both trends will be linked to a presumption of generality that spread through some fields of biology in the late twentieth century.
